BBC Proms 2017 in Binaural and Lossless Sound

Many thanks for Owen for nudging me with regards to the BBC Proms this year. It does seem as though they have abandoned the Surround experiment in favour of Binaural

Owen sent this list of the live binaural broadcasts, which are available here.

The BBC is also broadcasting (i assume just the stereo feed) losslessly, using FLAC, which is available here

  1. I’ve just listened to the latter part of the prom recreating Sir Malcolm Sergeant’s 500th prom. Listening to the lossless stream using a SqueezeBox with iPlayer plugin into my hifi. Young Person’s Guide To The Orchestra was fantastic, the clarity was amazing. I didn’t compare side by side with the 320kbps AAC because I was too caught up in the music to mess about and miss parts of it. But the clarity on the lossless stream was fantastic, I’ve never felt closer to a live performance.

  2. Wonder why they only do selected Proms – since they must have all the gear in situ..?
